Crews will close lanes on SW Hall Boulevard in Tigard starting Tuesday, Oct. 20, to install new pedestrian crossings near Fanno Creek Trail.
The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) announced Monday, Oct. 19 that drivers and pedestrians should expect flaggers, lane closures and temporary sidewalk detours on Hall Boulevard between SW Omara Street and SW Fanno Creek Trail. Work runs 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20, through Friday, Oct. 23.
The $2.8 million project, a partnership between ODOT and the City of Tigard, targets a stretch of the 35 mph corridor where pedestrians walk more than a quarter mile to reach the nearest signalized intersection, according to the project page.
Two crossings are getting work. At SW Omara Street, crews are installing a new Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB) on the north side of the intersection. The ground-mounted, pedestrian-activated crossing includes flashing yellow lights, a new median island and upgraded curb ramps.
At SW Fanno Creek Trail, the existing signalized crosswalk is being upgraded with a new pedestrian-activated beacon and an audible pedestrian signal.
Both locations will also get new lighting, signs and striping. Sidewalk curb ramps at both intersections are being rebuilt to meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements.
Once the project is finished, the existing unsignalized crosswalk on the south side of Hall Boulevard at SW Omara Street will be permanently closed, according to ODOT.
Bicyclists should plan to share the road with vehicles and use city streets during construction. Signed pedestrian detours will be posted around the work zone.
ODOT says RRFBs can reduce crashes by as much as 47%, citing the Federal Highway Administration. Pedestrians activate the beacons by pressing a button; when not in use, the lights stay dark.
The project follows a similar ODOT effort completed in December 2025 that installed pedestrian crossings at SW Spruce Street and SW Hemlock Street on Hall Boulevard, also in partnership with the City of Tigard and Washington County.
