Cake Hoopla, the DIY cake decorating studio on SW Dartmouth Street in Tigard, is adding holiday-themed classes and kids' camps to its lineup starting Nov. 8.
Owner JoJo Keating and co-owner Katie Troxel opened the studio in 2023 with help from a $25,000 matching grant through the Tigard Triangle Business Opportunity Fund. That city program uses tax increment financing to fund building improvements for businesses in the Tigard Triangle district. It offers 50% matching grants of up to $50,000 for food and beverage businesses and up to $25,000 for other eligible types.
The concept puts a spin on the You Paint Pottery model, Tigard Life reported. An in-house team bakes the cakes off-site using Keating's recipes. Keating then teaches visitors decorating techniques step by step.
Now in its third year, the studio offers tutorials, camps, classes, cake-and-sip nights, open studio hours, parties, corporate events and take-home kits.
Holiday lineup
Three events are on the November calendar. A three-part Christmas Cake Decorating 101 series for adults and kids 10 and older begins Nov. 8. Classes can be taken as a series or individually.
On Nov. 11, a full-day Fall into Fun School's Out Cake Camp brings autumn themes into the studio. Campers sculpt woodland creatures out of fondant, paint wafer-paper leaves and head home with a decorated six-inch cake after an afternoon popcorn and hot cocoa party. The camp is for kids in grades 2 through 6, according to the Cake Hoopla website.
A half-day Holiday Cake Camp on Nov. 25 focuses on edible Christmas trees. Campers take home a six-inch holiday cake.
The backstory
Keating and Troxel were college friends who met on the University of Idaho women's swim team. Keating said she initially considered opening a traditional bakery "and then it evolved from there because that's been done a million times," she told Tigard Life.
The Oregonian featured Cake Hoopla in August 2026, according to the business's press page. A PDX Parent Top 5 2026 Reader Favorites badge appears on the studio's website.
Cake Hoopla is at 7173 SW Dartmouth St. in Tigard. Regular studio hours are Wednesday and Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m., Friday from 1 to 7 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Details on holiday classes and camps are available at cakehoopla.com.
