SHOC Sunset Run & Walk Brings 5K, 10K to Durham Park on August 1

The City of Durham expects about 800 runners and walkers to descend on Durham City Park on Saturday, August 1, for the SHOC Sunset Run & Walk, a golden-hour race that loops through the park's off-leash area and nature trails along Fanno Creek.

The event, organized by Hood to Coast, offers a 5K, 10K, two-person 10K relay, and a free 1K walk for kids and parents.

Registration opens on-site at 4:30 p.m., with the kids' walk kicking off at 5:30 p.m., the 10K at 6 p.m., and the 5K at 6:15 p.m. The park will be in use for the event until 9 p.m.

All 5K and 10K finishers receive a medal and a t-shirt. Strollers are welcome in the 5K.

A post-race celebration at the finish line will include live music, local food vendors, and beverages.

Where proceeds go

Proceeds benefit the Sherie Hildreth Ovarian Cancer Foundation, a Portland-based, 100% volunteer-operated 501(c)(3) that has donated more than $1.475 million to ovarian and gynecologic cancer research under the direction of Dr. Tanja Pejovic. Sherie Hildreth founded the organization in 2005 after her own ovarian cancer diagnosis in October 2004. She passed away in 2009, but her family and supporters have kept the mission running.

The course and location

Durham City Park spans roughly 45 acres along Fanno Creek on the west side of Durham. The race route circles the off-leash dog area and nature loop, according to the city's announcement. Course maps for both the 5K and 10K are posted on RideWithGPS.

Runners should note that Hood to Coast's event page lists the location as "Tualatin Community Park," which sits directly adjacent to Durham City Park and connects by trail. Both parks share the Fanno Creek corridor, and the city's announcement confirms the route runs through Durham Park.
