Workers who ride TriMet to jobs in Tualatin's industrial corridor and shoppers heading to Bridgeport Village or downtown Tigard will lose bus connections or face reduced service starting August 23, when the agency's systemwide restructuring takes effect.

The changes hit five lines serving the two cities: Line 97 (Tualatin-Sherwood Road) will be eliminated entirely. Line 45 (Garden Home) will lose its link between Washington Square Transit Center and Tigard Transit Center, with weekend service cut and weekday trips reduced to high school commute hours only.

Line 37 (Lake Grove) will no longer run between Lake Oswego Transit Center and Tualatin Park & Ride. Line 76 (Hall/Greenburg) will drop service between Legacy Meridian Park Hospital in Tualatin and Oregon City Transit Center.

Line 96 (Tualatin/I-5) will be rerouted off Interstate 5 onto SW Boones Ferry Road, replacing Line 37's coverage. It will serve Barbur Transit Center via Mountain Park and PCC Sylvania but will run only during morning and afternoon rush hours with limited stops between Barbur Transit Center and downtown Portland.

Driven by a $158 million deficit

The cuts are part of TriMet's response to a $158 million long-term budget deficit. The agency's board adopted its $1.75 billion fiscal year 2027 budget on Wednesday, May 27, drawing on $187.4 million in reserves to close the gap between expenses and revenues. That budget reduces spending by $44.6 million compared to fiscal year 2026, including about $11 million in direct service cuts and a staffing reduction that began Tuesday, July 1.

Systemwide, 34 of TriMet's 79 bus lines and all five MAX lines will be directly affected on August 23, with two bus lines eliminated entirely. The MAX Green Line will be shortened to run only between Gateway and Clackamas Town Center transit centers.

What riders should expect

TriMet said in a Monday, July 14 announcement that affected riders may face longer walks, added transfers, or adjusted routes. The agency described the overhaul as focusing service "on areas where people are most likely to ride, while reducing duplication and eliminating service where ridership is very low."

LIFT Paratransit service boundaries in Tualatin will also shift as a result of the bus eliminations.

More cuts expected

TriMet said it will begin community engagement this fall on additional proposed cuts for 2027. No specific meeting dates have been announced for Tigard or Tualatin.
