A pickup truck that went airborne and tore through a Tigard family's home in February was one of three vehicles to crash into Washington County residences so far in 2026.
The most recent, a suspected DUI crash in Hillsboro on July 28, involved a driver whose blood alcohol registered more than twice the legal limit.
River Terrace crash displaced family
Around 3 a.m. on Feb. 13, a pickup truck heading westbound on Southwest Scholls Ferry Road near Roy Rogers Road struck a dirt mound, launching roughly 100 feet into the air and clearing a 3-foot brick wall before slamming into a home in the River Terrace subdivision, according to Tigard Police.
The truck destroyed the home's bathroom and left a massive hole in the structure.
"I got woken up, just the slamming and the house rumbled and like, it was, it was crazy," homeowner David Brudnok told KOIN 6 News that morning. "And then my wife was, was knitting in the room just right there and, and I heard her start screaming my name."
Brudnok, his wife and their young children were displaced. The American Red Cross assisted the family, and insurance covered a hotel stay while they assessed damages.
The 33-year-old driver and a passenger were trapped and required extrication by Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue. Both were taken to a hospital with minor injuries. Tigard Police arrested the driver on suspicion of reckless driving and recklessly endangering, saying he had been speeding prior to the crash. The department called on witnesses to provide video evidence.
Hillsboro DUI crash on July 28
The latest incident occurred around 11 p.m. on July 28, when a vehicle struck a house near Southeast Brookwood Avenue and Southeast Oakhurst Street in Hillsboro, according to the Hillsboro Police Department. No one inside was hurt.
The 27-year-old driver provided a breath sample showing a blood alcohol content of 0.21%, well above Oregon's legal limit of 0.08% and past the 0.15% threshold that triggers enhanced penalties under state law. He was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. As of Aug. 4, charges had not been filed in Washington County Circuit Court.
Third crash ruptured gas main
A separate incident on March 24 in Hillsboro involved a two-vehicle collision near East Main Street and Southeast 32nd Avenue that sent a truck into a residence around 12:05 p.m., according to the Hillsboro News-Times. The crash ruptured a gas main, forcing evacuation of homes within a 100-meter radius. Crews rescued a dog from inside the home. Hillsboro police said no criminal investigation was warranted in that case.
In January 2025, a driver died after crashing into a Tigard home in the 12500 block of Southwest Gaarde Street.
