Fifteen fire vehicles responded to SW Elwert Road near Sherwood on Tuesday, Aug. 11, after a brush fire broke out around 1:37 p.m. and burned an estimated 2 acres before crews contained it.

No one was hurt. No structures were damaged, according to a Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue spokesperson.

TVF&R confirmed the fire in the 20300 block of Elwert Road via posts on X, noting that crews were working to protect nearby property. The agency closed Elwert Road between SW Scholls-Sherwood Road and Edy Road for fire operations; the road remained shut as of 2:30 p.m. while firefighters mopped up the scene, the Valley Times reported.

The cause of the fire has not been announced. Scanner traffic relayed on social media indicated the blaze was moving through a cut hay field, though TVF&R has not confirmed that detail.

The response came just two days after TVF&R led a multi-agency effort to knock down a 25-acre grassfire near a Hillsboro landfill on Sunday, Aug. 9. Both fires erupted during a stretch of warm, dry weather that has produced the highest wildfire acreage in Oregon's recorded history.

Oregon and Washington had surpassed 3 million acres burned as of Aug. 9, the highest total since at least 2000, with 52 active large fires in the two states, according to KPTV. The National Interagency Fire Center forecasts significant fire potential through September, with below-normal precipitation expected into November, according to The Guardian.

The 15-vehicle response came while TVF&R crews were also deployed to statewide wildfires. Public affairs officer Corrine Haning said on Aug. 6, when the agency was sending crews across Oregon, that in-district protection remains the top priority. She told Your Oregon News that TVF&R "fulfills mutual aid requests only when in-district staffing levels can support sending personnel and equipment to assist elsewhere."
