Residents along North Dakota Street and Tigard Street will lose vehicle access to their roads over the next week as Tigard's slurry seal crews work through the neighborhood.

North Dakota Street between 109th Avenue and Tiedeman Avenue closes to through traffic Friday, Aug. 21, from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., according to the city's pavement maintenance schedule. Starting Monday, Aug. 24, crews shift to Tigard Street, where different segments close on different days through Thursday, Aug. 27.

The Monday work covers SW Cornell Place to Tiedeman Avenue; 115th Avenue between North Dakota Street and Tigard Street is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 25, with additional Tigard Street and North Dakota Street segments on Wednesday, Aug. 26, and Thursday, Aug. 27. All closures run 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Local access remains available on segments not actively being sealed, according to the city's project page. But residents must move all vehicles, trailers, garbage cans and basketball hoops off the street before their scheduled day. Outdoor water use that sends runoff onto the road is also prohibited because water interferes with curing.

The material looks like chocolate syrup when applied but is far stickier. It takes several hours to dry, during which motorists, pedestrians and pets must stay clear to avoid tracking it onto vehicles, shoes and paws.

Stay off the wet surface.

Because the closures roll through different segments each day, the city urges residents to check the day-by-day breakdown at tigard-or.gov/paving. Shady Place, Ventura Court, Barbara Lane and Cedar Crest Street, previously delayed, are now rescheduled for Friday, Aug. 28.

The crack-and-slurry-seal program launched Aug. 3, with slurry sealing beginning Aug. 12. It is funded by the Street Maintenance utility fee that appears on monthly City of Tigard utility bills. According to the city's project page, slurry seal costs roughly $0.30 per square foot, compared to about $3.00 for a full pavement overlay, making it about 10 times cheaper than repaving.

Garbage collection should not be interrupted, though timing may shift. The city recommends placing cans at the edge of the driveway rather than in the street. If heavy rain is forecast, work will be postponed and residents will be notified by new door hangers and updated street signs.
