Tigard students who walk, bike, skateboard or bus to school on Wednesday, Oct. 7, could win prizes as part of International Walk + Roll to School Day.

The City of Tigard's Safe Routes to School Program is encouraging all Tigard-Tualatin School District families to ditch the car for the day and try active transportation.

Individual schools are organizing their own events, so families should check with their campus for specific details and times.

The day falls during Mayor Yi-Kang Hu's proclaimed Week Without Driving, which runs Oct. 1–8, 2026. The proclamation, posted on the city's Instagram account, recognizes residents who cannot or do not drive because of age, ability, income or other circumstances and rely on walking, biking, transit or help from others.

Hu highlighted Walk + Roll Day in his September column in Tigard Life, writing that Safe Routes to School resources "can help families plan safer trips, learn about transportation options and help students build confidence traveling to and from school."

"We hope to see as many of our local students participating as possible," Hu wrote in the column.

The Safe Routes to School Program, funded with support from Metro and the Federal Transit Administration, has been visible in the community this fall. Staff fitted children with free bike helmets at an ODHS Free Food Market event in August and are scheduled to do the same at El Tigre Fest on Saturday, Oct. 3.

According to the city's Safe Routes to School program page, Walk + Roll events spotlight pedestrian safety, reduce traffic congestion near schools and get kids moving. The program calls active travel habits for young students a way to build independence and curb air pollution. It is free.

Volunteers and parent champions are needed at participating schools. Families can contact their school or visit the city's Safe Routes to School page for more information.
