A group of teen musical theater students will perform "Hadestown: Teen Edition" at Broadway Rose Theatre Company's New Stage in Tigard on Thursday, Aug. 13, through Saturday, Aug. 15, capping an intensive three-week summer camp with a fully staged production open to the public.
The show retells the Greek myth of Orpheus journeying to the underworld to rescue his love, Eurydice, from Hades, set to a jazz-infused score. It marks the culminating project of Broadway Rose's Teen Summer Camp, a workshop that draws students from across Oregon, according to director Trevor Hennigan. The camp is geared toward young performers serious about pursuing musical theater in high school, college or professionally.
Hennigan said the camp gives participants real-world experience in a professional setting.
"They bring such focus and passion, and I think the Broadway Rose audiences are going to be blown away by this year's group of storytellers as they take us on a journey to the Underground," Hennigan said in a statement published by Your Oregon News.
Broadway Rose, the Tigard-based nonprofit founded by Sharon Maroney and Dan Murphy in 1991, has offered teen summer workshops since the mid-1990s and is in its 35th anniversary season. The New Stage sits on the former C.F. Tigard Elementary School campus at 12850 SW Grant Ave., a space the company renovated and opened in December 2008. Need-based scholarships are available annually for the program, according to the company's published history.
Showtimes and tickets
Evening performances begin at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 13, and Friday, Aug. 14. Matinees run at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
