Five bus routes serving Tigard, Tualatin and Sherwood will be consolidated, rerouted or eliminated starting Sunday, Aug. 23, as TriMet implements what it calls one of its largest service changes in recent history.

The changes are part of a broader overhaul affecting 33 bus lines and the MAX Green Line regionwide.

Here's what local riders need to know:

Lines 37 and 96 (Lake Grove / Boones Ferry Road): These two routes are being combined. Line 96 will move off Interstate 5 and instead serve the former Line 37 route along Southwest Boones Ferry Road. The combined Line 96 will run only during morning and afternoon commute times — exact hours have not been published.

Lines 38 and 97 (Boones Ferry Road / Tualatin-Sherwood/Kruse Way): Also being merged. The new Line 97 will run between Sherwood and Barbur Transit Center.

Line 153 (Stafford/Salamo): Eliminated entirely due to low ridership.

Line 76 (Hall/Greenburg): Service between Tualatin and Oregon City Transit Center is being cut. The route is being extended north to replace Line 20 between Beaverton Transit Center and Sunset Transit Center instead.

The budget picture

TriMet is drawing on $187.4 million in reserve funds to cover the gap between projected expenses and revenue. The agency has cut more than 500 positions since July 2025, reducing its workforce from 3,708 to 3,204. About 170 employees were laid off this year.

Administrative spending is down roughly $44.4 million compared with the previous adopted budget. TriMet said the reductions are necessary now to preserve long-term regional service, and that it must cut service levels by at least 10% by July 2028 to align operations with revenue.

The agency plans to begin community outreach this fall on additional cuts proposed for 2027.

Separately, Washington County announced an online survey on its Transit Development Plan, which will guide transit investments for fiscal years 2027–28 and 2028–29. Stephen Roberts, director of Washington County's Department of Land Use & Transportation, said Aug. 18 that public feedback "will influence the adjustments and improvements we pursue."
