A Gresham man faces kidnapping charges after deputies say he stole a car with a woman inside and fled at over 100 mph on Highway 26.

Tyrone Thompson, 27, was arrested Friday, Sept. 4, after the chase ended near Scappoose when the stolen black Mercedes ran out of gas, according to a Washington County Sheriff's Office (WCSO) press release. The passenger was found inside the vehicle, uninjured.

The incident began around 2:45 a.m. on Highway 26 near SW Murray Blvd. A deputy on a Labor Day weekend DUII enforcement mission spotted two vehicles speeding westbound.

The driver of a white Audi flagged the deputy down and pointed toward the Mercedes.

The Audi driver told the deputy the Mercedes had just been stolen outside a bar in Portland with a friend still inside.

The Mercedes driver sped away. Deputies picked up the pursuit on Highway 26 as the vehicle headed east toward Portland at speeds over 100 mph. The chase continued through Portland and on Highway 30 toward Scappoose in Columbia County before the Mercedes ran out of fuel.

Deputies detained Thompson and found the passenger unharmed. According to the WCSO, the passenger said she tried to call for help, but the driver grabbed her phone and kept driving.

The Washington County District Attorney's Office formally charged Thompson on Tuesday, Sept. 8, with second-degree kidnapping, unauthorized use of a vehicle and possession of a stolen vehicle.

He also faces charges of fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, reckless driving, recklessly endangering another person and second-degree criminal mischief, Your Oregon News reported.

Thompson was booked into the Washington County Jail. No arraignment date or bail information has been made public.

The arrest came during a broader Labor Day traffic safety operation. Over the holiday period, WCSO deputies made 448 traffic stops for violations and identified eight impaired drivers across Washington County.
