Joe Brown's Carmel Corn is bringing its 94-year-old popcorn operation to Tigard.

The family-run shop holds its grand opening at Washington Square's second-floor food court at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 30, according to a company Instagram post and a news release reported by The Oregonian.

The new location is at 9585 SW Washington Square Rd.

For Tigard shoppers, the move means access to a Portland institution that spent 66 years inside Lloyd Center before that Northeast Portland mall permanently closed Aug. 8.

Joe Brown's was Lloyd Center's longest-tenured tenant, selling striped boxes of popcorn from the same second-floor storefront since the mall opened in 1960, The Oregonian reported.

The Washington Square location will carry the shop's signature flavors: caramel corn, cheddar cheese, white cheddar, kettle corn and the sweet-and-savory Oregon Style Corn, which blends caramel and yellow cheese popcorn, according to the Beaverton Valley Times.

New to the menu are cookies, banana pudding, cheesecake and caramel apples.

Owner David Ferguson, who bought the business in 2019, wrote in a news release that the move carries personal weight. "For generations, Joe Brown's has been part of Portland families' traditions and memories," Ferguson said, according to The Oregonian.

He grew up visiting Lloyd Center as a kid in the 1980s, always leaving with a bag of popcorn.

Joe Brown's first opened in downtown Portland in 1932 and expanded to three locations by the mid-1930s, according to the company's website. World War II forced closures in the 1940s.

The debut of Lloyd Center in 1960 brought the business back.

On Lloyd Center's last day, lines outside the popcorn shop stretched past 100 customers for hours, The Oregonian reported in October. Overhead announcements declared the mall officially shut, but people kept waiting.

Beyond Washington Square, Joe Brown's also sells popcorn at the Moda Center and Veterans Memorial Coliseum through a partnership with Levy Restaurants' River & Rose Hospitality, per the company's news release. Ferguson told The Oregonian that an announcement about an eastside location may also be in the works.
