Two Tualatin residents face felony weapon charges after the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office says they pointed bows at multiple groups of people trying to swim at a popular recreation site along the Molalla River on July 21.

Alexis Alberta Johnson, 55, and Donald Allen Lee Furtney-Cole, 46, were arrested that evening at the Three Bears Recreation Site in the Molalla Forest Recreation Corridor, about 10 miles southeast of the town of Molalla.

Both were booked into Clackamas County Jail. They face two counts of unlawful use of a weapon and two counts of menacing in Clackamas County Circuit Court.

What happened

Deputies responded to reports of a menacing in progress near mile marker 4.5 along the river, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Callers said they had been trying to reach the water to swim when a woman at a nearby campsite began yelling that they could not use the area. She then allegedly grabbed what witnesses described as a loaded crossbow and pointed it at them.

A short time later, a separate group of visitors flagged down a Molalla Police Department officer and described a similar encounter with the same campers.

In that incident, the woman allegedly held a bag of arrows while the man allegedly pointed what witnesses described as a crossbow at the group, yelling at them to leave.

Multiple deputies arrived and contacted the campers. Based on statements from multiple witnesses, deputies determined the pair had menaced people with compound bows to intimidate them into leaving the area.

Deputies confiscated two compound bows and a quiver of arrows from the campsite.

Weapon description

Witnesses in both encounters described the weapons as crossbows. Deputies identified the seized weapons as compound bows, according to the Sheriff's Office. The two weapon types differ in design.

The location

The Molalla River Corridor is a Bureau of Land Management recreation area in Clackamas County that draws swimmers, campers, and boaters from across the Portland metro area during summer months. The Three Bears campground offers walk-in tent sites available by reservation through recreation.gov.

No court date has been set. No arraignment or bail information has been released for Johnson or Furtney-Cole. The case remains active under CCSO Case No. 26-014282.
